Holiday Decorating Trends 2021

November 11, 2021/in Organization /by Cara Chatellier

With Halloween and Daylight Savings Time in the rearview mirror and Thanksgiving fast approaching on our heels, there is one thing on everyone’s mind this time of year: the holidays are here, and it’s time to decorate our home. Leaving somber and distant feelings of the 2020 holiday season in the past, 2021 is very much about going all out with decorating your home this year.

Whether you’re hoping to add new staple holiday decorations to the exterior of your home or want to outfit the interior with a cozy and modern vibe that exudes warmth and togetherness, the holiday decorating trends of 2021 is sure to meet the mark. Be the talk of the neighborhood with a home that exudes holiday spirit.

Here are my top 5 favorite holiday decorating trends of the year.

1. Bright colors

Red and green are thought of as the staple colors of the holiday season year in and year out. Although still popular for those looking to follow a traditional route, this year is all about bright colors. Whether an ode to the celebration of coming together after 2020 or a way to uniquely celebrate the holiday with a personalized twist, bright colors are all the rage.

The spectrum for following this trend differs widely based on each person’s ideal decorative scheme, but there are still ways to keep the traditional cozy feel and add pops of color. Consider switching out your holiday tree ornaments with ones that are bright in hue.

Other ways to bring in a more striking color palette are to change up the design on your Christmas cards, add pops of color to your seasonal wreaths, or opt for the colorful lights on your home or tree instead of the standard white ones.

2. Organic and simplistic accessories

Another big trend for the holiday season is simplistic, organic, clean lives. As the holiday season approaches, many fill their homes from top to bottom with seasonal pieces. This trend is about turning the tables on the traditional overly decorated home. One trend within this design scheme is opting for a tree that is slim, slender, and not too large, so it doesn’t take over the space that you place it in. Other toned-down decor ideas include more delicate home accents and wall hangings, simple greenery, and more muted hues such as greens, blues, and browns. This style is all about providing a sense of peace and calm in your home amid the chaos that the holidays can bring. This choice is the perfect design option for those looking to outfit their home for the season without feeling overwhelmed by the seasonal decor.

3. Retro tree trimmings

Nothing says nostalgia quite like retro tree trimmings. From wrapped beading to timeless ornaments, outfitting your tree with blasts from the past is completely in season this year. What seems to be most popular this year is glass ornaments that give off the vibes of the 1950s and 1960s. From simple nutcrackers to timeless Santas, nothing is off the table when choosing old-school decorations this year. The best way to find them? Ask your family members if they have any passed down to them, visit yard sales or buy online. Even if they weren’t technically created years ago, you are sure to find retro designs on the market.

4. Soft, white lighting

When it comes to the holidays or winter in general, the goal is to exude a cozy and warm atmosphere. One way to accomplish this is by filling your home with soft white lighting. Add strings of white lights throughout your living spaces and around your tree to set the mood for a calming ambiance, especially during the long evening hours. Decorate the exterior of your home with simple white lights that trace the shape of your space.

5. Oversized ornaments

If you love to decorate the exterior of your home but aren’t a fan of the gigantic blow-up inflatables, a great alternative is to add a few oversized ornaments to your space. Yes, we know that inflatables are a great option when you have a home filled with children who shriek at the sight of anything Santa, but we know that they don’t match everyone’s holiday aesthetic. Including one or two large ornament figures by your entrance or on your front porch will give off holiday vibes without feeling too over-the-top. In addition, the options for oversized ornaments often come in neutral colors that can add holiday cheer to your space without making it feel tacky.

If you’ve just moved into your new dream home or celebrating your 20th holiday season in your current home, decorating for the season is so magical every year, especially if you’re in Massachusetts or New England. The holiday season is truly the most wonderful time of year. Whether you choose to celebrate traditionally or want to decorate your home in one of the popular 2021 trends, there is one thing for sure: a holiday celebrated with the ones you love is the greatest gift of all.

House Numerology 101

July 23, 2021/in Community, Education /by Cara Chatellier

When it comes to buying (or selling!) a home, numbers are everything! From the price of the home, closing costs, mileage from your preferred location, and square footage to the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and parking spaces, numbers rule. Whether you’re in the process of buying your first home or looking into upgrading your current home, numbers play a pivotal role in deciding whether a home is right for you. House numerology may be another numbers-based item you want to consider before signing on the line for your next big purchase.

We want all the good karma when it comes to your new home, so learn more about how house numerology can help you decide if the energy and essence of a potential home is right for you… or, if the home you’re living in now fits into your soulful vibration.

What is numerology?

In the most basic terms, numerology is the study of numbers and their effect on your life. It has been said that numbers have a universal language that can be decoded into different levels and types of energy. The main idea is that everything in the universe is made up of certain numbers and when we break the numbers down to the core numbers we can best determine their main purpose or soul path. This is true for both living and nonliving things.

Everyone has a life path number. You calculate this number by using the entirety of your birthday and then simplifying it to a single number that provides you with a deeper look and understanding into your soul’s purpose. For example, if your birthday was March 15, 1988, your life number would be 3 (month of birth) + 15 (day of birth) + (year broken down into single digits) 1+9+8+8 = 44. Then, take 4+4 = 8. Your life path number would be eight.

Each life path number, from 1-9, has a specific set of personality traits and characteristics that represent each person and thing that belongs within that path number. By knowing your life path number and diving deeper into understanding it, you may learn more about yourself and the path you are on in your life.

Why is house numerology, in particular, important?

For those who are innately curious about their own life path number, discovering your home’s number may be another way to determine if you and your home are in sync. The main idea behind house numerology is that each street address, and house number, has a specific energy and tone tied to it. Determining what that is helps you understand whether the home is compatible with you.

How do I find my house number?

Calculating your house number is simple and handled the same way you would your own life number. You take the number within the address and add all the numbers together. Then you add the numbers within the sum together until you get one digit. For example, if you lived on 1234 Main Street you would calculate it by adding 1+2+3+4 = 10, then add 1+ 0 = 1, so your house number, in numerology, would be one.  If your normal address has a letter after the house number, say 1234B Mainstreet, you would treat the letter as an additional number. Going through the alphabet, each letter has a corresponding number. A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4 and so on. In this example it would be 1+2+3+4+2= 12, then 1+2 = 3, so your house numerology number would be three.

Understanding Home Numbers

Now that you’ve calculated your house number’s numerology, it is time to understand exactly what energy and traits your home holds.

Number One Homes

In basic numerology the number one represents a creative side, along with standing for innovation and the drive to fulfill a purpose. People who live in a number one home can tap into their creativity with ease and explore all that is available to them with the latest innovations. These homes are especially wonderful for entrepreneurs and those who work from home.

Number Two Homes

The number two represents a high level of sentiment and compassion, making these homes ideal for couples, families and close knit friends. Overall, these homes are perfect for a sense of bonding and togetherness.

Number Three Homes

The number three is the most social of all numbers. These homes are great for entertaining, socialization and overall welcoming interactions. These homes are ideal for hosting parties, both big and small, and being the leader in the neighborhood for general entertainment.

Number Four Homes

The number four is a grounded number that lends itself to a high level of practicality. These homes thrive on a constant sense for structure and organization, making them good fits for small businesses or quaint organizations.

Number Five Homes

Like three, the number five is a very social and outgoing number. These homes are rooted in celebrations and socialization, so gatherings are a must. People in these homes are often found to live more in the present moment, letting go of things of the past with ease. Number five homes are ideal for holiday celebrations and the most robust gatherings.

Number Six Homes

The number six is one of compassion, grace, security and generosity, making their homes an ideal fit for children, families and pets. These homes are often very warm and welcoming to all who enter.

Number Seven Homes

The number seven represents peace and reflectivity. Often, these homes are treated as solitude sanctuaries for those who live within them. They are the perfect place for those who love yoga, meditation, quiet reflection and mindfulness.

Number Eight Homes

Eight represents wealth and prosperity. This is  the perfect home setting for those looking to grow in their career or business. Growth is the main focus within this home.

Number Nine Homes

The most loving of the numbers, nine represents outward love, happiness and acceptance. This is a home where everyone who enters instantly feels welcomed upon each visit. This makes it a social place filled with positivity and understanding.

Determining your home numerology number can be a great tool in deciding if a home is the right fit for you and your family. We would love to help you score the home of your dreams. Summer Curb Appeal

Summer Curb Appeal Ideas

July 17, 2020/in Community, Organization /by Cara Chatellier

As homeowners you probably find yourself spending most of your home design time indoors, picking the perfect furniture to compliment your bay windowed living room and accessorizing your beach-themed guest bedroom. There are so many design elements that take on a story of their own inside of your home. Updating and freshening up the interior is important each season, but don’t forget the exterior. Curb appeal brings life to the outside of your home. As we embrace the summer season consider kicking up your curb appeal a notch to welcome your company in style.

The Front Door

The focal point of your home, as guests arrive, is typically the front entrance. Consider changing the door to a vibrant color that compliments the exterior color of your home. Add a summer-themed door hanging or wreath. Accessorize the area around the front door with hanging plants, wind chimes or porch plants that frame your door perfectly. Small, welcoming elements make your guests feel comfortable and instantly invited.

The Front Porch

Now that you’ve added some pizazz to your front door, upgrade your porch to compliment your style. Consider adding a porch swing or a set of rockers. By adding a seating area to the front of your house, you expand the entertainment space for both you and your visitors. Imagine yourself enjoying a cold drink on your porch swing watching the sunset after a long day. Dreamy, right?

Flowers Dress Up Your Exterior

Landscaping can do wonders for your curb appeal. Flowers and plants, lined around the exterior of your home, create a beautiful silhouette. If you fear the proverbial green thumb you can opt for low-maintenance plants that thrive well in the space. Think hydrangeas for shaded gardens or the juniper shrub that thrives in full sunlight. Consider lining your walkway with flowers to draw the eye into your front porch. If you don’t have much of a front yard for planting, but still want to dress up the space with flowers, choose window boxes. You can customize the style of the boxes as well as the flowers.

Lighting Defines Your Exterior

Exterior lights can be a beautiful architectural element. Change out the sconces for a brand-new look. Place lights in areas that accent the elements of your home and draw the eye in. Lighting is also an essential element for security, so think about adding in motion sensor lights to darker areas of your exterior, such as the side of the home or near the garage.

Create a Backyard Oasis

When thinking curb appeal, don’t forget your backyard. This extension of your home can be a sanctuary, especially in the warmer months. Add in ample seating, a dining space, a fire pit and line with globe string lights to turn your spot into the ultimate entertaining space. You can use this space to host game nights, family dinners or as a place to kick back and relax for some alone time.

Curb appeal is a piece of your home that can be ever evolving. Change up the elements each season for a fresh reset. Focus on the outside of your home and put just as much love in the design as you do in the interior to uplift your home’s potential.

Preparing your Home to put on the Market

March 5, 2018/in For Sale, Housing, Organization /by Maura Allard

Staging your Home to put on the Market

You have made that scary decision to list your house on the market… congratulations!  The next step is to get your home ready for the public to view.  The Container Store is your new best friend. You will want to make a trip there and pick up totes, totes, and more totes.  Start decluttering; no personal pictures, religious items, school treasures, stuffed animals, knick-knacks or shot glass collections need to be on display.  Par down closets, clean off countertops. Adopt the mindset you are moving and start packing.  If your house is cluttered people will be distracted by the clutter and will not see the features of the house.

Take a look around. Ask yourself, how is the paint?  Are there scuff marks on the stair risers? Do your walls need a fresh coat?  Paint is your friend. Pick a neutral shade and brighten up your home.  Take a trip to Walmart or Target. Pick up some new fresh white towels for the bathroom, maybe a new white shower curtain as well.  Pretty throw pillows also look great on a couch or bed!  No need to spend a lot of money to make a few powerful changes.

Make sure everything is sparkling clean. Hire a cleaner if you need to. If you list with me I will pay to have your home professionally cleaned prior to the first open house.  If you have pets, get them groomed and rid the house of pet hair.

Decks and porches will shine with potted plants!  If your deck is lackluster, stain it.  Lay mulch where needed to add curb appeal. Put your best foot forward before putting the for sale sign on the lawn!
