Holistic Feng Shui - Why is the energy in our homes and our environment so important?

Here is the short version. In Holistic Feng Shui we understand that energy is literally EVERYWHERE.  Everything in our environments contain energy and it affects us every minute of every day whether we are conscious of it or not, and let’s face it, most of us are just far too busy to be remotely aware of the energy we are surrounding ourselves with and moving through daily.

Yet, just a few simple adjustments in your environment and routines can have a significant impact on us. In this blog we are going to start with just a few easy ways to begin to make small shifts, that over time can have big impact in our lives.  Energy that flows, is balanced and harmonized can make a home feel relaxed, calm and a place you can’t wait to come home too.  It improves our mood which improves our mental state which affects our physical state in a positive way. If you dread opening the door to your home, if your home feels overwhelming, heavy and unpleasant this also affects our mental state which affects our overall physical state in a less desirable way.

Three easy Holistic Feng Shui tips to start shifting some energy in your home

#1. Mail – It is not uncommon to grab the mail and throw it on top of the counter.  In fact, we may throw an entire weeks’ worth of mail on the counter.  All that mail just sitting on a countertop, table or chair is that terrible C word CLUTTER! Clutter slows down energy and prohibits it from moving freely through our home.  Also, most of our mail is junk and we don’t need more junk in our homes.  So, if at all possible don’t bring the unnecessary mail into the house.  If it’s just too much to sort the mail and dispose of the junk mail prior to coming into your house then leave a small basket outside your front door.  Place all the junk mail in there and take the mail that needs addressing into the house.  When you can, recycle the junk mail.  Place the mail that needs a response in a place where it can easily be located and dealt with when the time comes (this should only take a couple of minutes).  Do place bills in your office or a designated workspace.  Do not place bills near where you sleep, eat or relax.

#2. Front Door – The front door is the first thing we touch.  In Holistic Feng Shui we believe that all positive energy  and opportunities enter your home through the front door (the mouth of the home). We want to welcome energy into our home, just like you would welcome a guest, so make sure your front door is squeaky clean (wash with a water and vinegar or water and dish washing soap solution).  Your front door handle/knob should be secure (I have had clients say I just can’t get a handle on my finances or health, but the front door handle to their home is loose or broken).  If there are chips in the paint, touch them up.  There should not be any rips or tears in an exterior screen door if you have one.  The surrounding area around the front door should be clear of any debris, masonry should be in good shape and the doorbell working.

#3. Plants – Fake plants are easy to keep, but do nothing to support the energy of your home.  Studies have shown that live indoor plants eliminate air pollutants, reduce stress, boost moods, enhance the overall appearance of your home, increase creativity, and they can help cultivate compassion (the world definitely needs more compassion) since you need to care for them.  Just buy one plant to start and then add more as you feel ready. To help with the success of your indoor plants, pay attention to the amount of sunlight, watering and temperature they will require.
